In April Northumberland County Council commissioned Adapt (North East) and Community Action Northumberland to develop and deliver a new look ‘Getabout’ Scheme for the county.
Getabout has run for a number of years as a volunteer car scheme with the aim of meeting the needs of those people who don’t have their own transport and are unable to access public services. Under the new arrangements, this valuable service will be continued and extended. However the scheme will also take a broader approach to solving transport issues. The service aims to work closely with communities to better understand and address the range of transport needs of their residents.
Adapt (North East) will take responsibility for running the volunteer car scheme on a day to day basis, whilst CAN’s role is to build on our relationship with key community organisations such as Parish councils, community buildings and VCS organisations, to recruit new volunteers and develop a number of pilot projects to provide effective solutions tailored to local needs.
